KEVIN FENSKE
Professor of Practice in Euphonium
Dr. Kevin Fenske is the Professor of Practice in Euphonium at the University of Houston where he teaches undergraduate and graduate applied lessons and brass chamber music at the Moores School of Music, as well as assists with “The Spirit of Houston” marching band. He is an active low brass educator, clinician, soloist, and chamber musician. Students of his have been awarded accolades at the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, South-Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, and accepted into major universities and festivals around the United States. Additionally, Dr. Fenske serves as the Director and Founder of the Texas Low Brass Academy, a summer music camp and educational series for young low brass musicians centered around the exposure to low brass chamber music, artistic and personal development, and accessible world-class musical instruction.
As a performer, he has won prizes at various solo and chamber competitions, including the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, International Tuba-Euphonium Conference, The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, International Women’s Brass Conference, and the Briggs Chamber Music Competition, among others. He has performed as a guest with groups such as the Houston Symphony, Austin Symphony Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic, Akron Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Honseo Quartet and A2ba Quartet, and a regular member of the Backburner Tuba and Euphonium Collective. An advocate for new music, he has both commissioned and premiered works by Kevin Day, Alex Shapiro, Drew Bonner, Fernando Deddos, Benjamin Horne, Jose Flores, Ian Lester, and Aaron Perrine. Dr. Fenske served on the 2020-2021 UIL Prescribed Music List solo committee for the state of Texas adding over 100 new solos to the state music list, including the addition of works for solo euphonium & electronics. He has been an invited guest performer, clinician, and adjudicator at universities across the country and events such as the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Tuba- Euphonium Workshop, Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, National Band Association, Texas Music Educators Association convention, and the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest.
Dr. Fenske holds degrees from the University of Michigan (DMA and MM), University of Texas at Austin (MM), and the University of Houston (BM) in performance, chamber music, and music education. His primary teachers include David Zerkel, Charles Villarrubia, and Danny Vinson.
