Joshua Unikel has exhibited at the 2022 AIGA National Conference; Dubai Art Season 2020 (UAE); Sofia Art Week 2019 (Bulgaria); Griffith University Art Gallery (Australia); DesignPhiladelphia; the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; the Center for Contemporary Printmaking; and elsewhere.
His work is included in the collections of the Library of Congress’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Collection; the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum Library; Yale’s Beinecke Library; the Poetry Foundation; the Center for Book Arts (NYC); the Letterform Archive; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Hirsch Library; and other institutions.
He is the co-editor of Beyond Category (Hobart and William Smith Colleges Press, 2015) and has been published in The Iowa Review, Western Humanities Review, The Collagist, Tupelo Quarterly, The Journal, Sonora Review, [PANK], TriQuarterly, The Essay Review, Fugue, The Normal School, Essay Daily, and other national journals.
He has lectured at TypeCon, the AIGA Design Educators Conference (DEC), the Design History Society Conference, the ReVIEWING Black Mountain College Conference, AWP, NonfictioNOW, and elsewhere. His work has been supported by residencies at AGA Lab (The Netherlands) and DesignInquiry, where he was a two-time fellow. In 2022, he was also named an AIGA DEC Design & Writing Fellow.
Unikel is affiliate faculty in the University of Houston’s Center for Public History.
